Yawa Hansen-Quao stands as a beacon of female empowerment in Africa, dedicating her life to nurturing leadership among young women.
As the founder of the Leading Ladies Network (LLN), she has cultivated a community of over 12,000 women and girls across the Global South, equipping them with the skills and confidence to lead in various sectors. Her mission is clear: to normalize fearless female leadership and dismantle the barriers that hinder women’s advancement in society.
Born in Accra, Ghana, Yawa’s early life was marked by displacement due to political unrest, leading her family to seek refuge in Togo and later the United States. Returning to Ghana in 1996, she faced cultural reintegration challenges but remained steadfast in her educational pursuits. At Ashesi University, she made history by becoming the first female student government president in Ghana, a testament to her leadership potential and resilience.
Yawa’s academic journey is as diverse as it is impressive. She holds a BSc in Business Administration from Ashesi University, an MA in Gender, Peace & Security from the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, and an Honors degree in Entrepreneurship & New Product Development from the American University of Rome. Additionally, she has earned certifications in Radio & TV Presentation and Corporate Etiquette & International Protocol, showcasing her commitment to continuous learning and versatility.
Under her leadership, LLN has launched impactful initiatives like the Girls’ Governance Camp, designed to inspire young girls to pursue careers in public service and politics. These programs not only impart essential leadership skills but also foster a sense of civic responsibility among participants. Yawa’s efforts have been recognized globally, earning her accolades such as the Eisenhower Fellowship and the title of Vlisco Ghana Ambassador.
Beyond LLN, Yawa has served in various capacities, including as Executive Director of Emerging Public Leaders and as a board member for institutions like Ashesi University and the African Leadership Academy’s AL for Governance Network.
