An Open Letter to the Man Who Told Me I Look Better Without Makeup

Every woman has met him: the man who feels qualified to weigh in on her appearance. This week, one writer offers a thoughtful response.

To the man in the corner of the office hallway who looked at my face, tilted his head, and delivered what you genuinely believed was a compliment: “You know, you look so much better without makeup.”

Thank you. Truly. For years, I had apparently been navigating the world of beauty, skincare, and cosmetics without realizing that the missing piece of the puzzle was the opinion of a passing observer. How fortunate that you arrived just in time to help me see the error of my ways.

It is fascinating how often conversations about women’s appearance come with the assumption that every beauty decision is somehow connected to what men prefer. As though every lipstick, foundation, serum, and mascara wand exists primarily to satisfy a particular audience. Yet when many women sit in front of a mirror each morning, the thought process is usually much simpler: How do I want to present myself today? How do I want to feel? What version of myself do I want to bring into the world?

The challenge with the “better without makeup” compliment is that it often carries more weight than people realize. On the surface, it sounds like praise. Underneath, it can feel like a subtle judgment about the choices a woman makes regarding her own appearance. It shifts the conversation from appreciation to evaluation, as though beauty exists on a scorecard waiting to be marked.

What makes the conversation even more interesting is how differently people define “natural.” When many people say they prefer women without makeup, they are rarely referring to a truly bare face. They often mean a polished, effortless look that appears natural: the lightly evened skin tone, the groomed brows, the subtle concealer, the glow that looks effortless but often requires both products and technique to achieve. In other words, what many people admire is not necessarily the absence of makeup, but the skillful use of it.

That is perhaps what gets lost in these conversations. Makeup is not always about transformation. For many women, it is a form of creativity, self-expression, routine, confidence, or simple enjoyment. Some days it feels like artistry. Other days it feels like preparation. Sometimes it is neither; sometimes it is simply a personal choice that requires no deeper explanation.

We live in a time when women are increasingly intentional about how they spend their energy, time, and resources. Whether that means investing in skincare, mastering makeup techniques, embracing a bare face, or switching between all of the above, the decision ultimately belongs to the person looking back from the mirror.

So, to the man who told me I look better without makeup, I believe your comment was probably well-intentioned. But perhaps there is another way to offer the compliment. Instead of telling a woman what version of herself is “better,” simply tell her she looks wonderful. Leave room for her choices. Leave room for her preferences. Leave room for the possibility that she already knows exactly how she wants to look.

Because beauty is not a public project, and a woman’s face is not awaiting approval from a panel of judges. Sometimes the most thoughtful compliment is the simplest one: “You look great.” And then trusting her to decide the rest.
