Born on August 12, 1990, in Mombasa, Kenya, Crystal Asige is a multifaceted personality—musician, disability rights advocate, and politician. She gained national recognition as the first female artist signed to Sauti Sol’s Sol Generation label, notably featuring in the 2019 hit song “Extravaganza.”

Her academic pursuits led her to the United Kingdom, where she studied film and theater at the University of the West of England, Bristol. During her time abroad, she began experiencing vision problems, which were later diagnosed as glaucoma.

This condition eventually led to the complete loss of sight in her early twenties. Undeterred by her visual impairment, Crystal became a vocal advocate for persons with disabilities (PWDs), leveraging her platform to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. Her efforts culminated in her nomination to the Kenyan Senate in 2022 by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to represent persons with disabilities.

In the Senate, Crystal has been instrumental in passing legislation that supports people with disabilities, including tax breaks for caregivers and the promotion of Kenyan Sign Language. Her advocacy extends beyond legislation; she has been a vocal participant in international forums such as UN Habitat and the One Young World Summit, bringing attention to the challenges faced by persons with disabilities.

Crystal’s story is a powerful reminder that disability is not a limitation but a unique perspective that can drive meaningful change. Her work continues to inspire and pave the way for greater inclusivity.
