In a country where political participation often feels out of reach for many young women, Glanis Changachirere is changing the narrative. As the founder of the Institute for Young Women Development (IYWD) in Zimbabwe, Glanis has made it her mission to empower young women to take their rightful place in politics, leadership, and public life.
Her work is rooted in the belief that sustainable development and true democracy are impossible without the full inclusion of women — especially the youth.
Her journey began in rural Zimbabwe, where she witnessed firsthand how systemic inequalities silenced women and denied them opportunities. Rather than accept this reality, Glanis chose to confront it.
While still a university student, she launched IYWD as a platform to elevate young women’s voices, educate them on their rights, and provide them with the tools to engage in civic life. From community workshops to national advocacy campaigns, her work has been tireless, and the results powerful.
Under Glanis’ leadership, IYWD has become a formidable force, reaching thousands of young women across Zimbabwe. The organization runs programs focused on political participation, leadership development, and sexual and reproductive health rights — all essential areas for building agency and confidence. Through IYWD, young women have run for public office, led community councils, and boldly stepped into decision-making spaces once closed off to them.
The road hasn’t been easy. Glanis has faced backlash, political resistance, and threats — especially in a country where speaking out can come at a high cost. But she has never wavered. Instead, she has remained grounded in community and fueled by a deep sense of justice. Her work is not just advocacy — it’s movement-building, grounded in love, courage, and collective power.
Today, Glanis Changachirere stands as one of Zimbabwe’s most influential women’s rights activists. Through IYWD, she is not only creating space — she is shifting culture. With every young woman who finds her voice and steps into leadership, Glanis is building a Zimbabwe where women’s participation is not the exception, but the norm.
