Abigail Kwartekaa Quartey defied societal expectations to become Ghana’s first female world boxing champion.
Growing up in Jamestown, Accra, she faced opposition from her family and community, who believed boxing was not suitable for women. Despite these challenges, Quartey pursued her passion, training at the Black Panthers Gym with the support of her brother and coach.
Financial constraints forced her to pause her boxing career in 2017, during which she sold lottery tickets to make ends meet. However, her determination led her back to the ring in 2021. In November 2024, she made history by winning the WIBF World Super Bantamweight title after defeating British boxer Sangeeta Birdi at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Jamestown.
Quartey’s victory was not just a personal achievement but a significant milestone for Ghanaian women in sports. Her success has inspired other young women, like 18-year-old Perpetual Okaijah, to pursue boxing despite societal pressures.
Quartey’s journey highlights the importance of perseverance and the impact of role models in breaking gender barriers. She continues to train and mentor aspiring female boxers, advocating for greater support and recognition of women’s boxing in Ghana. Her story serves as a testament to the power of resilience and the potential of women in sports.
