Following one’s passion is the hallmark of many successful entrepreneurs in Africa, and Masego Mohajane is building her company, M-Squared Medical, on that same foundation. She is passionate about her business and committed to building a brand and company that can really make a difference in the industry and community.

We spoke to M-Squared Medical founder, Masego Mohajane, about her entrepreneurial journey and her aspirations for the company going forward.

What does your company do?

At M-Squared Medical, we specialise in medical equipment sales and maintenance, medical consumables sales and medical equipment rentals.

What inspired you to start your company?

Being in the medical engineering industry for over 10 years, I felt like I had reached a threshold. During my time being a technical manager for the ultrasound department, I saw a gap in the market that wasn’t penetrated by organisations similar to the one I was working for. I then decided to take a leap and tap into that market. Since I made that decision and I have never, ever looked back.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

M-Squared Medical believes strongly in building continuous relationships with our clients,  promising to deliver high quality products and services at cost effective prices. Our relationship with our clients also ensures an ongoing quick response, and strong after-sales support on all the modalities we specialise in.

Tell us a little about your team.

Our team compromises of young and dynamic individuals who are eager to make a mark in the medical engineering industry. Their professionalism, dedication and honesty is the key to making M-Squared a success.

“I used to believe that as a black woman, starting a business would be easy and that I would easily get support from different organisations. But I was very wrong and I came to the realisation that if I don’t push hard enough then no one will come and support my dream.”

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

As we all know, entrepreneurship is a challenge and my journey hasn’t been an easy one. I founded this company and got it off the ground through sweat and hard work. I didn’t have any mentor to guide me through the different phases that I needed to go through. However, having no background in entrepreneurship, I managed to pull through and make the busines a success. M-squared Medical still has a long way to go, yet despite the challenges I face, I am still determined to make it one of the top medical engineering companies in Africa. I used to believe that as a black woman, starting a business would be easy and that I would easily get support from different organisations. But I was very wrong and I came to the realisation that if I don’t push hard enough then no one will come and support my dream. There were times when I wanted to go back to my managerial post with all the perks that came with it, but my passion and belief in the business made me decide to continue and stay focused on my dream.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

Growing and expanding the business is crucial for M-squared. Going forward, our aspirations include:

  • Having a staff of 50 people within the next 2 years, mostly youth.
  • Having a training center that will assist in skills transfer.
  • Having branches in Cape Town, Durban, PE and Bloemfontein.
  • Giving back to the community.
  • Expanding into Africa.
  • Developing the first probe repair center in South Africa.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

Seeing a happy client after services have been rendered to them.

What’s the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

That you must never ever start a business with your own capital, and also that once you have a dream, never ever give up on it, even if others don’t understand it.
