A woman of substance, an icon of inspiration, and a beacon of hope to millions of African women. Mosunmola Abudu, popularly known as Mo Abudu, is a trailblazer, a pioneer, and a visionary who has shattered the glass ceiling of African media and entertainment industry. Her journey from a humble beginning to becoming the media mogul she is today is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Mo Abudu was born in London in 1964 to Nigerian parents. Her early years were marked by financial struggles, and she had to work hard to make ends meet. She studied at West Kent College and later earned a degree in Law from the University of Westminster. After graduation, she worked as a recruitment consultant and later as a human resources executive for several companies in the UK and Nigeria.

Despite her success in the corporate world, Mo Abudu had a burning passion for media and entertainment. In 2006, she founded the media production company, Vic Lawrence & Associates Limited, which later became EbonyLife TV. Her aim was to create a platform for African storytelling and promote African culture and lifestyle to the world. It was a bold move, considering that the African media industry was largely dominated by foreign media.

Mo Abudu’s journey to building EbonyLife TV was not an easy one. She faced several challenges, including financial setbacks and the skepticism of some who doubted the viability of her vision. However, she persevered, and in 2013, EbonyLife TV launched as the first pan-African entertainment and lifestyle television network. Today, EbonyLife TV reaches over 49 countries in Africa and beyond and has become a leading media brand that celebrates Africa’s diversity, creativity, and talent.

Mo Abudu’s success goes beyond EbonyLife TV. She has produced several award-winning movies, including “The Wedding Party,” which became the highest-grossing Nigerian movie of all time. She has also received numerous awards and recognitions, including being named one of Forbes Africa’s “20 Most Powerful Women in Africa.”

Mo Abudu’s journey from grass to grace is an inspiring one. She has shown that with hard work, determination, and a burning passion, one can achieve anything. Her story is a reminder to African women that they have the power to shape their destiny and make their dreams come true.

Mosunmola Abudu’s life is a testament to the power of perseverance and self-belief. Her journey from a humble beginning to becoming a media mogul has not only inspired millions of African women but has also challenged the status quo of the African media industry. As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2023, let us draw inspiration from the life and legacy of Mo Abudu and continue to push the boundaries of what is possible.
