Sexist/ racist ideologies or not, African American power women in the 21st century are no doubt redefining labels and playing influential roles in different spheres combating the most pressing of problems and shaping today’s world.

As par our tradition at Duchess International Magazine we take great pride in the celebration of #BlackExcellence. Rewriting popular narrative and celebrating thinkers, doers, movers and shakers in various fields of endeavor.
This November we celebrate;
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
Trailblazer. Power woman. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala makes history as Nigeria’s first female finance and foreign minister. Ditching labels and rewriting statusquo is definitely not new to the Nigerian-born economist and international development expert.
Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, 66, a former World Bank Managing Director is headed for the chair of the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), a position she rightly deserves owing to her super impressive resume and on the field experience, proof of which is having secured cross-regional backing from highly placed individuals and bodies against strong US’ opposition. If successful in her bid to become the next #WTO Director General, the finance guru will become the body’s first female head and first African to take lead of the respected unit.
Aisha Yesufu
Ever passionate, eloquent, audacious no nonsense activist whose blood boils at the very sight of injustice. Aisha Yesufu, foremost Nigerian socio political activist brings the in- your-face approach to activism and bravely doesn’t mind making more than a few enemies while at it, as long it involves saving lives.
Dubbed the voice of freedom, the face of courage and now the Nigerian statue of liberty, Yesufu Co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement, was in the forefront bringing the bitter reality of the abduction of over 200 girls, from a secondary school in Chibok, Nigeria, on 14 April 2014, by the terrorist group Boko Haram to the world.
Yet again this spirited activist showed up October 2020 to fight for yet another noteworthy cause, the disbandment of the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad #SARS, not one to wait for a glorious invite before lending her voice, Aisha Yesufu brings her gloves to the open whenever she sights cases of gross maltreatment of the oppressed.
Salute to these power women waving the African flag high!
