What Do You Think? China’s Divorce Law and the Bigger Conversation for Women

The conversations surrounding China’s divorce law have generated mixed reactions across social media. Some people believe the changes are fair, while others argue they expose an uncomfortable reality about marriage, ownership and financial security. Regardless of where you stand, one thing is certain: the debate has opened the door to a much bigger conversation, especially for women.

Beyond the legal arguments lies a question that deserves honest reflection. How do we measure the value of a woman who has dedicated years of her life to raising children, managing a home and supporting her husband’s dreams? If much of her contribution cannot be measured in money, does that make it any less valuable?

Let’s be honest. Running a home is one of the most demanding jobs anyone can take on. It requires patience, sacrifice, consistency and resilience. There are no weekends off, no annual leave, no bonuses and no retirement benefits. It is a full-time commitment that often goes unnoticed because it is driven by love rather than a salary.

Yet, this is where many women find themselves vulnerable. Years are spent investing in everyone else’s future while very little is invested in their own. The children grow up, the family flourishes and the husband’s career progresses, but somewhere along the way, many women quietly set aside the dreams they once had before marriage.

This is not to suggest that every marriage will end in divorce. Far from it. Marriage should be built on love, trust and commitment. However, wisdom also teaches us to prepare for life’s uncertainties. No one can predict tomorrow, and no one should have to start life over without the skills, confidence or financial stability to move forward.

The conversation around China’s divorce law also raises another important question. If a woman spends decades nurturing children and building a home, where do we place the value of those efforts? Caring for a family is real work. It shapes lives, builds character and creates the foundation upon which many successful families are built. Yet it is unpaid labour. There is no monthly salary waiting at the end of the month. There is no pension for the years invested in motherhood and homemaking.

Perhaps this is why every woman should be encouraged to build something of her own while building her home. Learn a skill. Grow your career. Start a business. Invest. Own assets. Create opportunities that secure your future. Financial independence is not a declaration of distrust; it is an act of wisdom. It does not compete with marriage. It complements it.

A woman can be deeply committed to her marriage while remaining committed to her personal growth. She can be a devoted wife and a successful entrepreneur. She can be an exceptional mother and a respected professional. Supporting a husband should never require abandoning one’s own purpose. Marriage should be a partnership where both individuals continue to grow together.

The greatest lesson from this conversation is not whether Nigeria will ever adopt laws similar to China’s. That remains uncertain. The real lesson is that every woman deserves the security that comes from knowing she has invested in herself as much as she has invested in her family.

So, what do you think? Should a woman’s years of raising children, managing a home and supporting her family carry greater financial recognition? Or is the bigger lesson simply that every woman, regardless of how loving or stable her marriage may be, should strive to build a life, a career and financial security of her own?

The conversation is yours.
