Breaking barriers is one achievement; building a legacy that inspires lasting progress is another. Hon. Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun has accomplished both. As the first female Executive Chairman of Epe Local Government, she has combined entrepreneurial insight, cultural advocacy, and people-centred governance to redefine what grassroots leadership can achieve. Her emergence as a history-maker is not merely a personal milestone but a powerful testament to the growing influence of women in leadership and their capacity to drive meaningful development at the grassroots.
Born into the distinguished Animashaun royal family of Epe, Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun was born on Lagos Island and spent her formative years in Ebute Metta, Lagos. From an early age, she displayed a remarkable sense of responsibility and enterprise. While pursuing her education, she assisted in her father’s engineering business, balancing academic commitments with practical business experience. Those formative years instilled discipline, resilience, and a strong work ethic, qualities that would later become the foundation of her leadership journey.
Her entrepreneurial journey flourished long before she ventured into politics. Inspired by her father’s integrity and industrious spirit, she developed an exceptional ability to identify opportunities and transform ideas into thriving ventures. Her interest in community development naturally extended to tourism and cultural promotion, where she recognised the untapped potential of Epe’s rich history and heritage. As Chief Executive Officer of the Epe Ancient City Project, she championed initiatives that celebrated the town’s historical significance, promoted its tourism assets, and positioned Epe as a destination with immense cultural and economic value. Through strategic advocacy and partnerships, she demonstrated how preserving heritage could also become a catalyst for economic growth.
Her passion for service eventually led her into public administration. In 2017, she was appointed Supervisor for Environment in Epe Local Government, where she introduced initiatives aimed at improving environmental sanitation and promoting a cleaner, healthier community. Her practical approach to governance, coupled with a determination to achieve measurable results, earned her respect as an administrator who understood the needs of the people and remained committed to addressing them.
History was made in 2021 when Princess Animashaun became the first woman elected Executive Chairman of Epe Local Government. Her election represented a significant breakthrough in a local government with a long political history and reflected the confidence of the people in her leadership abilities. Rather than viewing the office as a symbol of personal achievement, she embraced it as a platform to deliver impactful governance and improve the lives of residents across the local government.
Since assuming office, her administration has pursued an ambitious agenda centred on sustainable development and inclusive governance. Road rehabilitation projects, improvements to educational facilities, strengthened primary healthcare services, environmental sanitation initiatives, potable water projects, and agricultural support programmes have formed part of her administration’s efforts to improve living standards. She has also prioritised youth empowerment, women’s development, skills acquisition, support for artisans and entrepreneurs, staff welfare, and community security, recognising that meaningful development requires investment in people as much as in infrastructure.
Princess Animashaun has remained a passionate advocate for tourism and cultural preservation throughout her years in public service. She believes that museums, historical landmarks, festivals, and indigenous traditions are invaluable assets capable of educating future generations while creating employment and stimulating local economies. Her vision for Epe extends beyond physical infrastructure to building a community where culture, commerce, innovation, and sustainable development work together to create lasting prosperity.
Her leadership philosophy is rooted in service, integrity, resilience, and accountability. She believes that effective leadership requires listening to the people, embracing innovation, and remaining focused on solutions that improve lives. These values have shaped her approach to governance and strengthened her commitment to ensuring that public office remains a vehicle for positive transformation rather than personal gain.
Beyond her official responsibilities, Princess Animashaun continues to inspire women aspiring to leadership across Nigeria. Her journey demonstrates that determination, competence, and a genuine desire to serve can overcome traditional barriers and open new pathways for future generations. By making history as the first female Executive Chairman of Epe Local Government, she has not only expanded opportunities for women in grassroots politics but has also shown that inclusive leadership can produce lasting impact.
Hon. Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun’s story is one of vision, perseverance, and purposeful service. From her early experiences in business to her achievements in tourism promotion and public administration, she has consistently demonstrated that true leadership is measured by the lives it transforms. As she continues to champion development, preserve Epe’s cultural heritage, and empower communities, her legacy stands as an enduring reminder that when women lead with purpose, they do more than break barriers. They build stronger communities and inspire generations to come.
