Dubbed “The Most Famous Unknown Singer”; Talk about seven Number 1 hits!
Legendary R&B singer Martha Wash stands tall as one of the world’s most powerful vocalists behind multiple classic hits including: “It’s Raining Men” and “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” “Carry On” among to show. Unlike most mega music stars, although her standout vocals was heard on many top charting songs, ironically her face was replaced by models who lip sung.
She didn’t take it lying down; Wash fought, real hard to get her well deserved credit and compensation, becoming a vocal advocate for artists’ rights.
The music diva who began singing at the age of two in her parents’ church in San Francisco kicked off her musical career in the 70s as a backup singer for disco star Sylvester. She then got her big break after teaming up with the late Izora Armstead in the The Weather Girls. Their 1982 hit “It’s Raining Men” was massive! Well loved in the club. The 90s ushered in a new wave of superstardom for the singer who already boasted of a prolific career. With many tracks: C + C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now),” Black Box’s “Strike It Up” and “Everybody Everybody,” among others, she thereby earned the title – “Queen of Clubland.”
Known for her electrifying mesmerizing dance/club music, the two-time Grammy-nominated singer later went on to produce her own recording label Purple Rose Records.
Martha in 2013 released the critically acclaimed album Something Good.
The iconic dance-music star, this year January 2020 after an eight year hiatus from the music scene released her highly anticipated first full-length solo album “Love and Conflict” a tantalizing blend of blues-rock and R&B/jazz debuting on Purple Rose Records.
Beyond music, Martha lends her voice in supporting charitable organizations, such as “QSAC Inc”, a non-profit organization providing comprehensive services to individuals with Autism and their families. She also actively helps people affected by HIV/AIDS in the United States.
Over two decades in the music scene and proudly belting stellar accomplishments, the ever spectacular Martha Wash keeps breaking new grounds, applaudably cementing her already enviable musical legacy.
