Born in Denver to parents from Memphis and Detroit, with her mum herself being a former singer, a young Indie had a strong support system and kicked off singing right from childhood.
Collaborating with other local artists in Atlanta, Arie and the artists eventually formed the music group Groovement, but in 1999, Arie was discovered by a Universal/Motown music scout, she was then introduced to former Motown CEO Kedar Massenburg. At age 24 she began her career as a solo artist.
In 2001, the then budding singer
released her debut album Acoustic Soul, it met with rave reviews, a commercial success it debuted at number ten on the U.S. Billboard 200 and within months of massive airplay, Acoustic Soul was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America(RIAA), selling 2,180,000 copies in the U.S. and 3,000,000 copies worldwide.
