“I’m a woman with a vision, empowering women, one step at a time,” that is one of Joan Ella Omolara’s favourite quotes. But there is so much more to her story. Her journey from a survivor of domestic abuse to an advocate for women’s empowerment is nothing short of remarkable.

Growing up in Nigeria, Omolara dreamt of becoming a lawyer, but her dreams were dashed when she was forced into an arranged marriage at the young age of 18. What followed was years of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her husband. She was isolated from her family and friends, and her children were used as pawns to control her.

But Omolara refused to be a victim. She found strength in her faith and began to plot her escape. With the help of a friend, she fled to the United States and started a new life with her children.

It wasn’t easy. Omolara had to navigate a new country, a new culture, and a new language. But she was determined to succeed. She worked hard to put herself through college, earning a degree in social work. She then went on to get a master’s degree in public administration.

But Omolara’s journey was far from over. She knew that there were other women out there who were facing the same struggles that she had faced. She became an advocate for domestic abuse survivors, volunteering at a local women’s shelter and speaking at events to raise awareness about the issue.

In 2012, Omolara founded the Omolara Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering women and girls. Through the foundation, she has been able to provide education, health care, and economic opportunities to women and girls in Nigeria.

Omolara’s work has not gone unnoticed. She has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the prestigious Black Women in Business Award. She has also been featured in several publications, including Forbes Africa and The Huffington Post.

Today, Omolara continues to inspire and empower women. She travels the world, speaking at conferences and events, and using her platform to advocate for gender equality and women’s rights.

In a world where women still face discrimination and violence, Omolara’s story is a shining example of what can be achieved through determination and perseverance. She has not only overcome incredible adversity but has also used her experience to make a difference in the lives of others.
