Bold, fiercly outspoken and one of the world’s most brilliant minds. Today we celebrate one of Africa’s greatest talents, award winning Nigerian novelist, activist, and feminist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie!

Born September 15, 1977, Enugu, Nigeria, the celebrated author whose work has been translated into over thirty languages is known for novels Purple Hibiscus, which won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award; Half of a Yellow Sun, which won the Orange Prize and was a National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist and a New York Times Notable Book; and Americanah, which won the National Book Critics Circle Award and was named one of The New York Times Top Ten Best Books of 2013.
She is also author of The Thing Around Your Neck.

Ms. Adichie has appeared in various publications, including The New Yorker, Granta, The O. Henry Prize Stories, the Financial Times, and Zoetrope and has been invited to speak around the world. Her 2009 TED Talk, The Danger of A Single Story, – now one of the most-viewed TED Talks of all time. Her 2012 talk We Should All Be Feminists kicked off a global conversation about feminism, and was published as a book in 2014.

Listed among the 100 Most Influential Africans 2013, Chimamanda Adichie is a proud recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, The Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction (2007) and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (2008), Book Critics Circle Award 2013 (fiction category), for Americanah amongst others.

In 2001, she received a bachelor’s degree in communication and political science from Eastern Connecticut State University.

2003 Completed a master’s degree from the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University.

2008 Received a second master’s degree—this one in African studies—from Yale University.
