A new children’s book, Black and Bold Queens, is shining a spotlight on the remarkable women who have shaped Ghana’s history. The book, designed to educate and inspire young readers, highlights the stories of influential Ghanaian women, from fearless warrior queens to pioneering leaders, whose contributions have often been overlooked in mainstream narratives.
Written with engaging storytelling and vibrant illustrations, Black and Bold Queens introduces children to historical figures such as Yaa Asantewaa, the fearless Ashanti queen mother who led a resistance against British colonial forces, and Efua Sutherland, a literary icon and advocate for Ghanaian arts and culture. The book also pays tribute to contemporary trailblazers, ensuring that young readers see role models from both the past and present.
The author, in an interview, shared that the motivation behind the book was to instill a sense of pride and identity in Ghanaian children. “History is often told from a male-centered perspective, leaving out the powerful women who shaped our nation. Black and Bold Queens seeks to change that by celebrating the courage, wisdom, and resilience of Ghanaian women,” she said.
Educators and parents have welcomed the book, praising its role in fostering cultural awareness and empowering young girls to dream big. With growing interest in African heritage and representation in literature, Black and Bold Queens is poised to become a cherished addition to bookshelves across Ghana and beyond.
The book launch event, featuring readings, discussions, and interactive activities for children, is set to take place in Accra, bringing together historians, educators, and literary enthusiasts to celebrate the legacy of Ghana’s bold and brilliant women.
