Long before she emerged as one of Nigeria’s foremost legal practitioners, Badejo-Okusanya had already cultivated a passion for learning and excellence. She first studied English at the University of Lagos, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree before returning to the same institution to pursue a Bachelor of Laws degree. That uncommon academic path gave her an appreciation for both language and logic, two qualities that would become defining features of her legal career. Called to the Nigerian Bar in 2002, she began her professional journey at the renowned commercial law firm, Olaniwun Ajayi LP, where she acquired the discipline, precision and analytical rigour that distinguish exceptional advocates.
As her career progressed, so did the scope of her influence. Beyond representing clients in complex commercial disputes, she embraced opportunities that broadened her understanding of the law as an instrument of governance and institutional development. Her appointment as Senior Special Assistant on Justice Sector Reform in Lagos State exposed her to the intricate relationship between legal policy and public administration. She later served as General Counsel in the Governor’s Office, contributing legal insight to policy formulation and institutional reforms. Those experiences reinforced her belief that the legal profession exists not only to interpret the law but also to strengthen the institutions upon which justice and good governance depend.
Returning to private practice with this broader perspective, Badejo-Okusanya co-founded Africa Law Practice NG & Company, where she serves as Co-Head of the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice. Over the years, she built a distinguished career as a commercial litigator, arbitration specialist and trusted legal adviser, earning the confidence of clients through sound judgment, strategic thinking and unwavering professionalism. Her consistent pursuit of excellence culminated in her elevation to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), one of the highest honours in the legal profession. It was a recognition not only of legal brilliance but also of years of discipline, integrity and outstanding service to the law.
Yet, it was her commitment to the Bar itself that truly set her apart. While building a successful legal practice, she devoted herself to strengthening the Nigerian Bar Association through active service at both branch and national levels. From committee assignments to leadership responsibilities and the planning of major professional programmes, she consistently demonstrated a belief that the Bar must remain progressive, united and responsive to the changing realities of legal practice. She became known as a leader who valued collaboration over division, innovation over complacency and service above personal ambition. Those qualities steadily earned her the confidence and respect of colleagues across the country.
By the time Badejo-Okusanya declared her intention to contest for the presidency of the Nigerian Bar Association, her aspiration was widely seen as the natural progression of a career devoted to the profession. Lawyers did not simply see an accomplished advocate. They saw a leader who understood the realities of legal practice, appreciated the challenges confronting young and senior practitioners alike, and possessed both the experience and vision to move the profession forward. When members of the Association cast their votes in July 2026, they entrusted her with that vision, electing her as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association. In doing so, she became only the second woman to lead the Association and the first woman to attain the office through a direct vote of its members, marking a defining moment in the history of the Nigerian Bar.
