Chidinma Modupe Okafor has been officially certified by the Guinness World Records (GWR) as the new record holder for the longest crocheting marathon. The Nigerian crocheter achieved this remarkable feat by continuously crocheting a white dinner gown for an astonishing 72 hours, surpassing the previous record of 34 hours and 7 minutes set by Alessandra Hayden of the United States in 2021.
To accomplish this marathon crocheting session, Chidinma demonstrated exceptional dedication and stamina, crocheting without any significant breaks. Her process was relentless; as soon as she finished one ball of yarn, she immediately began working on the next. This continuous effort showcased not only her skill but also her unwavering commitment to her craft.
In reflecting on her achievement, Chidinma expressed her passion for highlighting the intricacies and endurance required in crocheting. “I aim to showcase the artistry and perseverance involved in this craft and promote awareness about crocheting and its benefits,” she said.
Chidinma’s record-breaking achievement involved rigorous preparation, which she detailed as, “rigorous training and mental conditioning. It also required physical endurance and strategizing to maintain a consistent pace while minimizing fatigue,” she explained. She also highlighted the logistical challenges she faced, such as ensuring a sufficient supply of yarn and arranging support staff to keep the attempt uninterrupted.
Chidinma’s record-breaking feat places her among an elite group of Nigerians who have recently made their mark in the Guinness World Records. This group includes Hilda Baci, known for her famous cook-a-thon, Helen Williams with records for the longest and widest wigs, Ewa Cole for the longest marathon singing Christmas songs, Clara Chizoba Kronborg for the longest interviewing marathon, and Tonye Solomon for the most steps climbed on a ladder while balancing a football on the head.
