Us First Lady Michelle Obama recognized Kenyan entrepreneur and Founder of Funkidz Furniture Ciru Wanjiru Waithaka.
Speaking at the first-ever United State of Women summit dinner, Michelle acknowledged the effort and role Waithaka had played despite having had a difficult beginning accessing capital as a woman.
“In my travel as First Lady I’ve met so many amazing young women and I’ve seen first-hand how smart, how strong and determined they are to fulfil their promises…” the First lady said.
“I would love to share many of those stories…. but there’s one I’d love to share tonight….and that woman is here tonight. Ciru waithaka. She is from Kenya… and so we are family,” She said to a thunderous applause from the guest.
Michelle went ahead and broke down what Waithaka had achieved as founder of FunKidz before calling her to the dais for a hug.
“This is worth stopping for, for a second,” She said as she gave the modest Ciru a hug.
Ciru Waithaka graduated with a degree in interior architecture and started Funkidz in 2010. In an interview with Business daily back in 2014, she said she had first ran a company Amber Africa and Dawn of Creation for 11 years before birth of FunKidz.
Media personality Caroline Mutoko celebrated Waithaka’s recognition posting the video clip on her Facebook page.
