Rahila Mohammed, a distinguished health professional with decades of frontline experience, has assumed the role of Vice Chairman of Kaduna State’s Kauru Local Government Area. Deeply rooted in healthcare and community service, she has worked hard professionally and as a health care advocate, especially for women in public service. Rahila’s tenure promises a fresh perspective, blending public health expertise with a commitment to local governance.
With over 20 years in the field, Rahila’s career trajectory reflects an unyielding dedication to improving public health across Kaduna. Her educational journey underscores this commitment, spanning from a Master’s in Public Health at Maryam Abacha American University in Niger Republic to specialized training in Public Health Nursing and Midwifery. Rahila’s academic qualifications are matched by her track record, solidifying her as a respected figure in healthcare leadership in the region.
Most recently, Rahila served as the Director of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) for Kubau Local Government, where she tackled sanitation issues that have long challenged the area. Her approach went beyond implementing policies; she emphasized hands-on involvement, leading disease prevention programs that have tangibly improved sanitation standards and reduced health risks for countless residents. Prior to that, as the Deputy Director of Disease Control, Rahila was a crucial figure in managing and mitigating health crises, providing rapid responses to disease outbreaks and collaborating on malaria and communicable disease initiatives.
Her extensive career includes several foundational roles in nursing and midwifery, starting from her early days as a midwife to her eventual position as a Chief Nursing Officer. In each role, Rahila not only honed her technical skills but also shaped her vision for public service. Her work as a Ward Focal Person in Kubau, for example, showcased her ability to lead community-focused initiatives and health campaigns, solidifying her status as a trusted health authority.
Rahila’s leadership qualities are exemplified by her active involvement in the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM). She has held various positions, including Secretary, Chairman of the Forum for Local Government Nurses and Midwives, and Treasurer of the Nursing Council Committee. Her influence in these roles extended to advocating for better working conditions and resources for healthcare workers, highlighting her dedication to systemic change and support for her colleagues.
Rahila’s role as Vice Chairman is unique, blending healthcare experience with a strong political commitment. Her work with the APC Professional Women Council, particularly as Kaduna State Coordinator, positions her as a proactive voice for women’s participation in governance. As Vice Chairman, she is expected to champion policies that prioritize healthcare access, sanitation, and women’s empowerment—a cause she has long supported and continues to advance.
Cultural roots play an equally important part in Rahila’s story. Recognized as a female titleholder of Jaruma Chawai in the Tsam Chawai Chiefdom, she brings a blend of tradition and progressive leadership to her position. This title is not only a badge of honor but also a call to represent her community’s values, bridging traditional and contemporary governance styles.
As she steps into this new role, Rahila Mohammed is poised to reshape the landscape of public health and local governance in Kauru. Her combination of expertise, experience, and passion for her community makes her a dynamic leader, capable of delivering tangible improvements while inspiring a new generation of female leaders in Kaduna and beyond.
