Tems never misses when it comes to fashion. Whether she’s commanding the stage on tour, gracing the Oscars red carpet, or accepting Grammy Awards, the Nigerian superstar always makes a statement with her style—and her 2025 Met Gala look was no exception.
For this year’s theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” Tems collaborated with British-Ghanaian designer Ozwald Boateng, a pioneer of contemporary Black dandyism. The result? A breath-taking custom gown that blended bold tailoring with feminine elegance—and paid tribute to her West African roots.
A Celebration of Black Excellence
“Black dandyism is Black excellence,” Tems told Harper’s Bazaar. “It’s about audacity, confidence, and standing out—and that’s exactly what we wanted to embody.”
The show-stopping ensemble featured a peacock-blue printed fabric (nearly mirroring the gala’s signature carpet), pinstriped sleeves, and a dramatic mermaid hem. But the pièce de résistance? A voluminous green bow at the front, nodding to Boateng’s signature menswear flair while adding a touch of regal femininity.
The Details That Made the Look
– Hair: Stylist Ashanti Lation crafted a sleek, braided up-do with delicate kiss curls framing Tems’ face—topped with a silk bow-tie accessory at the back.
– Makeup: Using Anastasia Beverly Hills, artist Kayla Perez created a sultry green smoky eye, glowing skin, and deep wine-stained lips for a look Tems described as “soft but fierce.”
– Accessories: Even the rain couldn’t dampen her shine—Tems accessorised with a matching umbrella and pale green manicure to complete the ensemble.
A Historic Collaboration
What made this moment even more special? It marked Boateng’s first-ever gown design. Known for his revolutionary menswear, he stepped into new territory with Tems as his muse.
“This is really special,” she shared. “He defines Black excellence to me, and I’m honoured to be the first woman he’s designed a gown for. I’ll never forget this day.”
From the bold tailoring to the cultural significance, Tems and Boateng delivered a Met Gala look that was more than just fashion—it was a celebration of heritage, artistry, and unapologetic Black brilliance.
