Adama Amanda Ndiaye, widely recognized by her brand name Adama Paris, is a Senegalese fashion designer who has transformed setbacks into stepping stones.

Born in Kinshasa, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo), to diplomat parents, she was exposed to diverse cultures from an early age. After studying economics and a brief stint in banking, she pursued her passion for fashion by taking design courses in Paris. In 2002, following an unexpected layoff, she launched her eponymous label, Adama Paris, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey in the fashion industry.

Adama Paris is renowned for its fusion of contemporary urban aesthetics with traditional African elements. The brand often incorporates woven loincloths made from organic cotton by Senegalese artisans, embodying the ethos of “fashion made in Africa for the world”.

Over the past two decades, the label has produced over 20 collections, including resort wear and swimwear, and has been featured in fashion capitals like New York, Tokyo, London, and Paris.

Recognizing the need for platforms to showcase African talent, Ndiaye founded Dakar Fashion Week in 2002. What began as a modest initiative has evolved into one of Africa’s most prestigious fashion events, attracting designers and audiences from across the globe.

In 2010, she expanded her vision by launching Black Fashion Week, with editions in Paris, Prague, Bahia, and Montreal, aiming to celebrate black designers and models and address their underrepresentation in the global fashion industry.

Beyond fashion shows, Ndiaye has been instrumental in promoting African fashion through various ventures. In 2014, she launched the Fashion Africa Channel, the first television channel dedicated entirely to African fashion, providing a platform for designers and trends from the continent . She also established Saargale, a multi-brand retailer, to further support African designers and bring their creations to a broader audience.

Adama Ndiaye’s journey is a testament to resilience, creativity, and a commitment to uplifting African fashion. Her work continues to inspire many, demonstrating that with passion and determination, one can redefine narratives and create impactful change.
