Finally, production has begun on the long waited Shirley Chisholm biopic, starring Academy Award winner Regina King.
Trailblazing U.S. congresswoman and lifelong social activist Shirley Chisholm is best known for becoming the first Black congresswoman (1968), representing New York State in the U.S. House of Representatives for seven terms.
The upcoming project, first announced in February, will not only see King starring in the lead role alongside Terrance Howard, but she will also produce under Royal Ties Production Company, owned and operated by Regina and her sister, Reina King.
Shirley is the story of “trailblazing political icon Shirley Chisholm, the first Black Congresswoman and the first Black woman to run for President of the U.S, and the cost of accomplishment for Shirley herself. This film will tell the story of Chisholm’s boundary-breaking and historic presidential campaign, based on exclusive and extensive conversations with family, friends, and those who knew her best.”
Written and directed by John Ridley, the film also stars Lance Reddick, Christina Jackson, Michael Cherrie, Dorian Missick, Amirah Vann, André Holland and Terrence Howard.
No release date for the biopic has been given.
