Joining Ese Brume to fly the Nigerian flag high at the ongoing Olympic games, ten-time African champion from 2010 to 2020 #BlessingOborududu world no 2. defeated Battsetseg Soronzobold of Mongolia 7-2 to bag a silver medal in the 68Kg women’s wrestling category at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday.
Although Oborududu lost the final of the 68kg women’s freestyle wrestling event 4-1 to America’s Tamyra Mensah-Stock, she, however, won silver.
The Nigerian wrestler has expressed plans to retire after Tokyo 2020 after a successful career spanning decades.
She faces Tamyra Mensah-Stock of the USA in the final.
“My first medal was a bronze in 2009,” she told Olympic Channel while competing at the 2019 African Games in Rabat.
Oborududu has won all African titles apart from 2012 when she skipped the continental event for London 2012, the first of her three Olympic appearances.
“I think this Olympics will be my last Olympics,” she said upon qualification for Tokyo 2020.
A graduate of Business Administration from the Niger-Delta University, this is her third consecutive Olympics.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Wrestling Federation elated about the feat disclosed Blessing Oborududu, was discovered during an inter-house sport at a high school.
The Caretaker Chairman of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation Daniel Igali, who made this known also said Oborududu was first invited to a national camp in 2007.
Igali said Oborududu was the project of the Federation since day one of his tenures.
“Blessing Oborududu is ranked no.2 in the world, we discovered her from an inter-house wrestling competition at her High school and had her in the national camp from 2007,” he said.
Igali expressed delight with the love Nigerians have displayed to the wrestling team at the Olympics.
“The wrestling team are determined more than ever continue with their superlative performance and you can see how everyone in Nigeria is anxious to see us do well,” Igali added.
