The much-anticipated film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel, “Children of Blood and Bone,” has officially announced its star-studded cast, with Thuso Mbedu and Viola Davis leading the ensemble.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, known for her work on “The Woman King,” the film promises to bring the rich narrative of Adeyemi’s fantasy epic to life. Mbedu, who previously collaborated with Prince-Bythewood in “The Woman King,” will portray Zélie, a young woman fighting to restore magic to her oppressed people in the fantasy kingdom of Orïsha. Viola Davis, an Academy Award winner, will take on the role of Mama Agba, a character central to the story’s lore.

The film boasts a diverse and talented cast, including Amandla Stenberg as Princess Amari, Damson Idris as Prince Inan, and Tosin Cole as Tzain, Zélie’s protective older brother. Other notable actors joining the project are Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea, Idris Elba as Lekan, Lashana Lynch as Jumoke, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as the ruthless King Saran. Negotiations are also underway to include Regina King as Queen Nehanda, Diaana Babnicova as Folake, and Bukky Bakray as Binta, adding even more depth to the already impressive lineup.

“Children of Blood and Bone” has captivated readers worldwide with its blend of African mythology, magic, and a quest for justice. Set in a world where magic has been eradicated by a tyrannical king, the story follows Zélie and her allies as they seek to restore their people’s magical abilities. This narrative not only promises adventure and fantasy but also delves into themes of power, identity, and resistance.

The film adaptation is set to start production in South Africa, highlighting the continent’s landscapes and reinforcing the story’s African roots. Paramount Pictures has scheduled the film for a theatrical release on January 15, 2027, in IMAX, ensuring a visually stunning presentation of Adeyemi’s vivid world.

Tomi Adeyemi, who will also serve as an executive producer, expressed her excitement about the project, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in representation. “Our incredible ensemble reflects the whole of the diaspora,” Prince-Bythewood added, echoing the sentiment of bringing a truly representative narrative to the screen.

The announcement has sparked excitement on social media, with fans and cinephiles alike praising the casting choices and the potential for “Children of Blood and Bone” to set a new standard for fantasy films with its focus on Black narratives and characters.

With such a dynamic team both in front of and behind the camera, “Children of Blood and Bone” is poised to be a landmark in film, offering a fresh perspective on the fantasy genre while celebrating African culture and storytelling.
