Rebecca Miano: The first Female Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of KenGen

Mrs. Rebecca Miano, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen), the leading electric power producer in East Africa. A position she has held since October 2017 and she became the first female CEO of KenGen since the incorporation of the company in 1954.

With over 30 years of experience in the energy sector, Rebecca Miano started her career in 1991 at the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC). She serves as the Company Secretary & Legal Affairs Director in 2010, and her commitment to service earn her the Company Secretary of the Year status in the Champions of Governance Awards series. And That same year, she also received the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (OGW) award from the Head of State in recognition of her outstanding service to the nation.

As CEO, She championed KenGen’s diversification under the Good-2-Great (G2G) Transformation Strategy. As a result of the company’s strong reputation, the company has ventured into the region offering renewable energy solutions most notably in the Horn of Africa where the company is undertaking two momentous geothermal development projects, the first of its kind.

Rebecca has been indispensable in the building of KenGen’s Pink Energy as the founding patron which was formed out of a need to encourage and facilitate female employees to grow boldly to their potential in line with their respective professions not only in middle management but also in top management.

She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree and a Diploma in Law from the University of Nairobi, a Post-Graduate Degree in Comparative Law, and an Advanced Management Program certification from Strathmore University.

She is a registered Certified Public Secretary of Kenya, as well as a member of the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (ICPSK) and the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

In 2019, she was named among Africa’s Top 100 Women CEOs by Reset Global People, Pulse, and Avance Media. Rebecca was also awarded the Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS) by the President of Kenya, H.E Uhuru Kenyatta for her contribution towards the growth of Kenya’s energy sector.
