The versatile screen magnet, regarded as one of the pillars of the Nigerian music industry boasts of leaving her footprints across areas most won’t even dare venture solely in. Her journey in journalism began in 1980 upon her return to Nigeria, she served at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) during her National Youth Service Corps. Not one to slow down, a year later Onwenu had already established herself as a superstar in the music world many thanks to the release of her first album, ‘Endless Life’ produced by renowned singer Sunny Okosun.

In 1984, Onwenu would also establish herself as a formidable force in media following the release of her internationally acclaimed documentary for BBC/NTA, Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches – an exposé of on corruption and environmental degradation of the oil-rich regions.

While at the NTA she served as a member on the board as well as worked as a TV presenter, hosting the shows Contact (1988) and Who’s On? (1993) on NTA Network.

As a singer, the award winning veteran has critically acclaimed songs such as, Iyogogo, One Love, Peace, You and I, Ekwe and others to her credit.
Onwenu is a proud holder of a BA in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College, Massachusetts, and an MA in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research, New York.

Before her return to Nigeria in 1980, the then budding career girl worked at the United Nations as a tour guide.

The 68 year old music diva born the youngest daughter of Nigerian educationist and politician D.K. Onwenu, hails from Imo State but was raised in Port Harcourt before living the shores of her native Nigeria to further her studies.

The veteran actress is known for movies such as: Muna (2019), Half of a Yellow Sun (2013) and God Calling Movie 2018 (2018). Onyeka Onwenu also served as Director-General of the National Centre for Women Affairs .? #queen#blackqueen#blackexcellence#blacklove#goals
