Stella Fubara-Obinwa is a name that resonates deeply in the world of tourism and destination marketing. As the Director of International Operations at the Dubai Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing, Stella has carved out a path that is as inspiring as it is impactful. Her journey from the loving confines of a Nigerian household to the bustling, cosmopolitan landscape of Dubai is a story of resilience, leadership, and a relentless drive to succeed.

A Nigerian Childhood: The Roots of Resilience

Born in Columbus, Ohio, to Nigerian parents, Stella’s early years were a blend of rich cultural experiences and strong family values. “I had an extremely loving childhood,” Stella recalls. Raised in a family that placed immense value on education and Christian upbringing, she was the second of seven children and the first daughter—a position that came with its own set of expectations.

Her childhood in Nigeria, particularly after moving from the United States to Enugu at the age of eight, was marked by challenges that would later define her resilience. From being teased for her American accent to navigating the complexities of a new culture, Stella maintained the happy spirit she is known for today. The supportive environment created by her parents, who encouraged academic, cultural, and musical pursuits, laid a strong foundation for her future endeavors.

From Dreams of Aviation to a Career in Business

Stella’s early dreams of becoming a pilot or an air hostess were emblematic of her adventurous spirit. However, her father’s insistence on obtaining a degree first steered her towards the business world—a decision that would later prove to be fortuitous. Despite beginning her university education in Electrical Engineering, Stella soon realized it wasn’t her calling. A pivotal conversation with her godfather redirected her path towards business, leading her to earn a B.Sc. in Business Management with a minor in Accounting from Franklin University in Ohio.

Her entry into the business world began in the United States, where she held significant roles, including Compensation & Pension Auditor at Nationwide Insurance and Project Controller at Deloitte & Touche. It was during her tenure at Walt Disney World, however, that Stella found her true passion in tourism, hospitality, and entertainment. This experience not only honed her skills but also ignited a deep-seated interest in the tourism sector, which she would carry with her throughout her career.

The Pivot to Tourism and Destination Marketing

Stella’s career in tourism began in earnest at Walt Disney World, where she was exposed to the magic of creating unforgettable experiences for visitors. “There is something quite rewarding about seeing happy faces every day,” she says, reflecting on her time at Disney. Her journey continued at Wyndham Vacation Hotels & Resorts, where she gained invaluable experience in marketing and operations across various locations in the United States and the Caribbean.

Her return to Nigeria in 2013 marked a significant turning point as she took on the role of Chief Business & Product Development Officer at Wakanow.com, Africa’s largest online travel agency. This role allowed her to channel her expertise into developing travel products and marketing strategies tailored to the African market. It was a role that not only deepened her understanding of the tourism industry but also solidified her reputation as a leader in the field.

A New Chapter in Dubai

Stella’s move to Dubai in 2015 as Director of International Operations Africa was both a personal and professional milestone. Her first visit to Dubai in 2014 had left a lasting impression—a city that defied her expectations with its beauty, efficiency, and hospitality. The transition to living and working in Dubai was seamless, and Stella quickly adapted to the vibrant, fast-paced environment.

“Dubai’s safety is unparalleled,” Stella notes, emphasizing one of the many reasons she and her family have thrived in the city. Her role in promoting Dubai to the African market is a testament to her ability to bridge cultures and create meaningful connections between people and places. Stella’s work has not only positioned Dubai as a top destination for African travelers but has also highlighted her as a key figure in the global tourism landscape.

Breaking Barriers as an African Woman in Leadership

Stella’s achievements are not just about her professional success; they are also about breaking barriers as an African woman in leadership. Her journey from Nigeria to the United States and now Dubai is a powerful narrative of what is possible when one is driven, loyal, and objective—qualities Stella herself embodies. She is keenly aware of the impact her story has on younger generations, particularly African women, who look to her as a role model.

“As an African woman, I’ve become an example to younger women that you should have aspirations,” she says. Stella’s advice is clear: pursue your goals with dignity, maintain professionalism, and always be kind. Her emphasis on maintaining class, learning etiquette, and treating others with respect is a reflection of the values instilled in her from a young age.

Stella Fubara-Obinwa: Life in Dubai

Outside of her professional life, Stella has fully embraced the lifestyle that Dubai offers. Her favorite spots include Global Village, Kiza—an African restaurant and lounge, and the Dubai Glow Garden, among others. Each of these places offers a unique experience, whether it’s the cultural richness of Global Village or the breathtaking beauty of Dubai Glow Garden.

Stella’s life in Dubai is a blend of work and personal fulfillment. She finds peace in her daily 5km walks along the canal, a routine that allows her to reflect and recharge. Her love for music, books, and puzzles also provides a counterbalance to the demands of her high-powered role.

Why Dubai?

For those considering Dubai as a destination—whether for travel, business, or relocation—Stella’s experience offers valuable insights. “You can have any type of life you choose in Dubai,” she says. From its safety to its accessibility, Dubai provides an environment where both individuals and families can thrive. The ease of obtaining a visa, coupled with the city’s modern amenities, makes Dubai an attractive destination for African wanderlusts, adventurers, and business travelers alike.

Stella Fubara-Obinwa’s journey is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have on an industry, a city, and a continent. As she continues to shape the future of tourism in Dubai, Stella remains rooted in her Pan-African identity, proud of her heritage and eager to inspire the next generation of leaders.
