The highly anticipated #Coming2America coming to screens March 5, 2021 has got everyone talking and now, Golden Globe winning actor #EddieMurphy with real-life daughter, 19 year old @bellamurphy_ all regal for @essence ‘ March + April issue spills “in an intimate reflection about the legend of the original movie and the heart of the upcoming sequel” ahead of it’s release.
The legendary comic, 59 and fast rising actress, Bella Murphy, his daughter with Nicole Murphy who stars as his on screen daughter in the upcoming film, Coming 2 America are Essence Magazine’s latest cover stars.
With the mag, Murphy talked about the ‘unique’ legacy of Coming To America and how important it was to pull of a stellar sequel.
‘Coming to America is one of my films that has really worked its way into the culture,’ Murphy told the magazine. People get dressed up as the characters for Halloween, and they still walk around saying catchphrases like “Sexual Chocolate.” All of that stuff just kind of stayed around—like Randy Watson doing the very first mic drop!’
The one thing that I didn’t want to do was a bad sequel to a movie that a lot of people have a lot invested,’ he said. ‘A lot of people grew up watching Coming to America. It’s special to them. So, you don’t want to taint that.’
Murphy reflecting on the 1988 comedy classic also pointed out the importance of Coming To America to Black culture, saying: ‘The legacy of Coming to America is that it is unique, it’s rare. Black people, we don’t get a lot of movies like this one.
‘Coming To America is a romantic fantasy comedy. Usually, when we see ourselves on the screen, it’s heavy things… Rarely do we get just to go see some escapism. Just to go see a movie and not have to think about any of that stuff.’ He added.
In the forthcoming sequel, Coming 2 America, Murphy’s character finds his way back to America to meet his estranged son, played by Jermaine Fowler. Though the original film featured an “all-Black cast”, said Murphy, it was not a movie about race.
“It’s not about, having a foot in your ass or ‘Wake up’ or ‘Keep hope alive’,” he said. “It’s none of those things that you can just go and sit back and watch the movie. And it’s about these people and it’s about somebody that’s trying to find true love.” “It’s like a fantasy, like a fairy tale. And that’s the legacy of the movie that it’s one of the few romantic fairytales with Black people.”
