The Evolving Women In Progress (EWIP) organization is making significant strides in empowering women and promoting their active participation in politics and governance across Nigeria and beyond. Founded four years ago, EWIP has grown into a formidable force, with a presence in all 36 states of Nigeria, as well as diaspora chapters in the UK, US, UAE, and Canada.
At the recent EWIP Lagos chapter’s first annual general meeting held in Ikeja, the National Treasurer, Olori Aderonke Erinle, reiterated the organization’s commitment to strengthening women and ensuring their voices are heard in Nigeria’s political landscape. With a vision to produce a female president in Nigeria, EWIP aims to increase women’s representation in the Senate and other strategic positions.
EWIP’s impact goes beyond politics, as it also serves as a social gathering that caters to the needs of women of all ages, religions, and tribes. Through medical outreaches, school fee payments for young girls, and other philanthropic gestures, EWIP is making a tangible difference in the lives of women across the country.
One of EWIP’s key objectives is to mitigate violence against women during elections and encourage their participation in the political process. The organization is self-sponsored and has no government affiliations, allowing it to operate independently and focus on its mission of empowering women.
The group emphasized the need for 50% involvement of women in politics, citing the Beijing declaration’s target, which has not yet been achieved. With women currently accounting for only about 28% of political participation, there is still a long way to go towards achieving gender equality in decision-making processes.
EWIP’s impact areas include advocacy for women’s participation in governance, women empowerment, advocacy for women’s rights, career development opportunities, and humanitarian services. Through these initiatives, EWIP is paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable society where women are actively involved in shaping the future of their communities and the nation at large.
