American middle-distance runner Athing Mu is on a roL and there’s no stopping her. Over the weekend, the two time Olympic champ blazed past competitors setting a new record running 1:55.04 to dominate the Pre Classic in her final race on Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Mu finished first before American Kate Grace and Jamaica’s Natoya Goule.
She is now the seventh-fastest performer of all time, moving ahead of fellow Olympic champions Doina Melinte of Romania (1984) and Maria Mutola of Mozambique (2000), and no woman has ever run faster in America.
Mu said when she saw the field, “I knew it was going to be kind of like another Olympic race.”
Now she plans to take a beach vacation with friends and her brother. “I need a little bit of time to sit down and relax, take in every moment and really look back at it and realize what it is exactly that I did,” Mu said. “I feel like I’ve just been running on a high.”
Recall the 19 year old champ won a gold medal in the 800 meters at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, breaking a national record set by Ajee’ Wilson in 2017, and a continental under-20 record.
