Barrister Jamila Babuba’s journey is a proof of her dedication to social justice and gender equality. Born in Jimeta-Yola, Adamawa State, she was influenced by her parents—her father, a retired veteran journalist, and her mother, a former Clerk of the Adamawa State House of Assembly. These early exposures instilled in her a passion for advocacy and public service. Pursuing law at the University of Maiduguri and furthering her studies at the Nigerian Law School in Abuja, she embarked on a legal career that spanned 17 years at the Adamawa State House of Assembly, serving as both an Estate Management Officer and Legal Officer.

Throughout her career, Babuba has been a staunch advocate for women’s rights. Her involvement with UN Women and the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development was pivotal in advancing the Adamawa Equal Opportunities Bill, aiming to provide equal rights to men and women. Her efforts in sensitization and advocacy were instrumental in moving the bill forward, reflecting her commitment to gender equality.

In her personal life, Babuba garnered public attention in 2021 when she married 23-year-old Adam Modibbo at the age of 45. The union, celebrated in Yola, Adamawa State, was a testament to her belief in personal agency and challenging societal norms.

As the newly inaugurated Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria, Adamawa State Branch, Babuba is poised to lead initiatives that enhance access to justice, combat gender-based violence, and promote legal literacy. Her leadership marks the beginning of a transformative era aimed at championing the rights of women, children, and the vulnerable within society.
