The veteran singer, songwriter, and actress reportedly died on Tuesday night after performing at an event in Banana Island, Lagos. Onwenu, who was a guest at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, was said to have slumped and was later confirmed dead at a hospital in Victoria Island, as reported by The Guardian. The family has yet to issue an official statement.
Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Onyeka Onwenu began her illustrious music career in the 1980s with her debut album “For the Love of You,” released in 1981. She quickly rose to prominence with her powerful voice and poignant lyrics, becoming one of the pioneering forces in Nigerian music. Among her numerous hits, the song “One Love” stands out as a timeless classic that continues to resonate with audiences across generations.
