The Nigerian music industry and the nation at large are mourning the loss of a legendary figure, Onyeka Onwenu, who passed away at the age of 72. The veteran singer, songwriter, and actress reportedly died on Tuesday night after performing at an event in Banana Island, Lagos. Onwenu, who was a guest at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, was said to have slumped and was later confirmed dead at a hospital in Victoria Island, as reported by The Guardian. The family has yet to issue an official statement.

Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Onyeka Onwenu began her illustrious music career in the 1980s with her debut album “For the Love of You,” released in 1981. She quickly rose to prominence with her powerful voice and poignant lyrics, becoming one of the pioneering forces in Nigerian music. Among her numerous hits, the song “One Love” stands out as a timeless classic that continues to resonate with audiences across generations.

Onwenu’s talent extended beyond music into the realm of acting, where she made significant contributions to Nollywood. Her performances in various films earned her acclaim and further cemented her status as a multifaceted artist. Over the years, she garnered numerous awards for her work in both music and film, reflecting her versatility and dedication to her craft.

Onyeka Onwenu was also a dedicated public servant. In 2013, she was appointed Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture, and in 2016, she became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development. Her commitment to public service and advocacy for women’s rights showcased her dedication to making a positive impact on Nigerian society.

Onwenu’s contributions were recognized with several honors, including the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011. She was also acknowledged as one of the most influential women in Nigeria by various organizations, a testament to her enduring legacy and influence.

Onyeka Onwenu’s passing marks the end of an era for Nigerian music and culture. Her legacy, however, lives on through her extensive body of work and the countless lives she touched with her music, films, and advocacy.
