On February 11, 2025, the United Nations celebrated the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, emphasizing the critical role of women in scientific fields and advocating for their full and equal participation. This year’s theme, “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science,” highlighted the importance of diversity and inclusion in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
UNESCO hosted a hybrid event at its Paris headquarters, featuring two insightful roundtable discussions. The first, titled “The Power of Diversity and Inclusion in Shaping the Future,” showcased speakers from various backgrounds sharing their journeys and underscoring how diverse perspectives enrich scientific innovation. The second roundtable, “Her Voice in Science: Inspiring Change in the Media,” examined the representation of women in science across mass media and discussed strategies to challenge gender stereotypes in STEM careers.
The event concluded with the screening of the documentary “Women of Science: These Women Who Change Our Lives,” directed by Safia Kessas. The film highlighted the journeys of six European women scientists, showcasing their remarkable contributions and the challenges they have overcome.
In his message for the occasion, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the critical role of gender equality in science for building a better future. He highlighted that women comprise only one-third of the global scientific community and often face systemic barriers and biases. Guterres called for dismantling gender stereotypes, promoting role models, and developing programs to support the advancement of women in science, stating, “Women and girls belong in science. It is time to recognize that inclusion fosters innovation, and let every woman and girl fulfill her true potential.”
As the world reflects on a decade of efforts to promote gender equality in science, these celebrations underscore the ongoing commitment to empowering women and girls in STEM, recognizing their invaluable contributions, and inspiring future generations to pursue scientific endeavors.
