Nigerian star Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, and South African sensation Tyla made history at the 2024 BET Awards, held at the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles. Tems secured her fourth BET Award, while Tyla won the awards for Best New Artist and Best International Act, marking significant achievements for African artists on the global stage.
Tems, a Grammy-winning artist, received the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award for her 2023 song “Me & U.” She triumphed over top contenders like Kirk Franklin, CeCe Winans, and Maverick City Music. This win adds to her previous BET Awards, including Best International Act and Best Collaboration for Wizkid’s “Essence” in 2022 and Best Collaboration for her song with Drake and Future, “Wait for U,” in 2023.
Reflecting on her success, Tems expressed her gratitude and excitement. “Winning this award is a testament to the power of music to inspire and uplift. I am grateful for the support and love from my fans and the BET community,” she said.
Tyla, captivated the audience by winning both Best New Artist and Best International Act. Her recognition underscores the growing influence and talent of African artists in the global music industry. “It’s an incredible honor to be recognized on such a prestigious platform. This is just the beginning, and I am excited for what the future holds,” Tyla shared.
The BET Awards, established in 2001 by Black Entertainment Television, celebrates the achievements of Black entertainers and other underrepresented groups in music, film, sports, and philanthropy. This year’s event highlighted the extraordinary contributions of African artists, with Tems and Tyla leading the way.
