Dr. Stella Chinyelu Okoli; Born on July 30, 1944, in Kano State, she hails from Nnewi in Anambra State. Her early education took place at All Saints Primary School in Onitsha, followed by Ogidi Girls’ Secondary School. Driven by a passion for healthcare, she pursued a Bachelor of Pharmacy at the University of Bradford, graduating in 1969, and furthered her studies with a Master’s degree in Biopharmaceutics from the University of London, Chelsea College, in 1971.
Her professional career began with significant roles in reputable institutions, including Middlesex Hospital in London, where she worked as a Ward/Clinical Pharmacist. She later joined Boots the Chemists Limited before returning to Nigeria, where she contributed to Massey Children’s Hospital in Lagos and later Park Davies Nigeria Ltd (now Pharma-Deko Plc), where she rose to the position of Sales Manager. These experiences refined her expertise and deepened her understanding of the pharmaceutical sector.
In 1977, she established Emzor Chemists Limited, a small retail pharmacy in Somolu, Lagos. Recognizing the urgent need for locally manufactured pharmaceutical products, she transitioned from importation to production, leading to the incorporation of Emzor Pharmaceutical Industries Limited in 1984. The company’s first product, Emzor Paracetamol, quickly became a household name, symbolizing affordable and reliable medication. Under her leadership, Emzor has expanded its product portfolio to over 50 therapeutic offerings, covering analgesics, antimalarials, antibiotics, and vitamins. Her commitment to quality and innovation has positioned the company as one of Nigeria’s foremost pharmaceutical brands.
Beyond her corporate achievements, Dr. Okoli is deeply involved in philanthropy. In 2006, following the tragic passing of her son, Chike, she established the Chike Okoli Foundation to raise awareness about cardiovascular diseases and to promote entrepreneurship among Nigerian youth. Through the foundation, the Chike Okoli Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies was founded at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, training thousands of students in entrepreneurial skills.
Her impact has been widely recognized, earning her numerous awards and honors, including the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). She has also served in leadership roles such as Vice President of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture. Her contributions to global entrepreneurship have been acknowledged with the International Entrepreneurial Challenge (IWEC) Award and the Silverbird Lifetime Achievement Award, among others.
