A new vegan eatery in Tallahassee, Florida, was created by a trio of young Black sisters.

Bourne Brilliant offers everything from house-made baked goods like cookies, cupcakes, and bread, along with fresh fruit juices, herbal teas, and preserves. Sisters Lyrica (13), Zaira (12), and Nadira (9) Leo launched their food business several years ago by selling their food at local farmers’ markets, festivals, and events.

Supported by their parents Jahlion and Syrheda La Shae Leo, along with Tallahassee chef Shacafrica Simmons, the sisters were able to realize what skillsets they bring to the table individually to successfully operate a business together.

Nadira helps set up shop and ensures that the shelves are stocked, Lyrica who enjoys cooking, serves as the head chef, and Zaira who is good with numbers helps work on inventory and finances.

“We felt positive about the decision to open at this time,” La Shae Leo shared with the Tallahassee Democrat, on their decision to open the eatery despite economic roadblocks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We traveled in South Carolina and Georgia this summer and looked at small businesses and retail to see what they were doing and what was working for them. We feel good about our safety practices.”

Masks are required of all guests and the family only allows five customers in the shop at a time. On Saturdays, customers are in for a treat with a rotating menu of hot dishes such as vegan barbecue drumsticks.

We love to see girl bosses dominate the industry at such a young age, congrats to the Leo sisters!
