Every 12th of August is commemorated as the International Youth Day, which is dedicated to youths across the globe.

The concept of International Youth Day was suggested in 1991 by the youngsters from Vienna, Austria, for the first conference of the UN’s World Youth Council.

United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) first designated 12th August as International Youth Day in 1999, and it was observed for the first time in 2000.

It is a golden opportunity for young folks to create awareness about the confrontation they usually face all over the world.

Each year, there is a new theme, depending on the trending happenings in the world. This year the theme of youth day is ‘Youth Engagement for Global Action’.

The rationale behind this year’s theme is based on the impact of the global pandemic which has not left out the youth. The economic impact of the pandemic has made the job market more challenging for the youths.

According to the World Bank, estimates suggest, around 600 million jobs would have to be created in the next 15 years to meet the employment needs of the youth globally.

In celebration of this year’s youth day, the UN has started a social media campaign #31DaysOfYOUth to put the spotlight on the young people and their engagement to bring about global change.

To participate in this, share the issues you are passionate about and the steps you are taking to address them, using the #31DaysofYOUth hashtag. The UN will also be using this hashtag to describe the steps it’s taking to include young people in its vital work around the world.

Also, for this Youth Day, consider reaching out to the climate champions you admire on social media and starting discussion pages where you can work together on the projects you’re most passionate about. It could be on Instagram, Twitter, FaceTime, or Zoom.

The world is waiting for what to you can offer, go out and make a difference.
