Senator Oluremi “Remi” Tinubu, First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has been honoured with the prestigious chieftaincy title “Ugosimba 1 of Enugu” during a working visit to Enugu State on June 10, 2025. The title—meaning “Jewel of Empowerment” in Igbo—was awarded by the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council in recognition of her efforts to promote women’s empowerment and social development across Nigeria.

The ceremony, held at a vibrant gathering attended by traditional rulers, government officials, women’s groups, and members of the public, saw the First Lady celebrated for her impactful initiatives under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI). During the event, she distributed 10,000 essential kits to midwives and granted ₦50 million to 1,000 women traders—each receiving ₦50,000—to support their businesses and improve maternal and child healthcare in the region.

The traditional investiture was led by His Royal Highness, Igwe Samuel Asadu, chairman of Enugu’s traditional rulers council. In his address, he commended the First Lady’s commitment to uplift vulnerable Nigerians, particularly women and children. The ceremony also served as a forum for bold endorsements, with Igwe Asadu publicly endorsing President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027—underscoring the coupling of traditional respect and political alignment.

Senator Tinubu, speaking at the event, described the title as “more than a ceremony—it’s a call to action.” She reaffirmed her dedication to serving Nigerian women, mothers, and entrepreneurs, pledging to expand outreach through her RHI platform. “This title fuels my purpose,” she said, highlighting the value of symbolic recognition in driving grassroots development.

Observers noted that the event underscored the growing influence of traditional institutions in shaping Nigeria’s socio-political landscape. The convergence of culture, charity, and politics marked a significant moment in Enugu’s history—sparked by the symbolic bestowment of “Ugosimba 1.”
