Nigerian singer Simisola Kosoko, widely known as Simi, has revealed a deeply personal battle with losing her sense of self in recent years. The artist, celebrated for her soulful voice and introspective lyrics, shared her experiences of struggling with imposter syndrome and feeling like a stranger to herself.

In a heartfelt message on her X handle, Simi reflected on the challenges she has faced, particularly the discomfort of losing touch with her inner self. She expressed that for most of her life, she had the privilege of knowing herself deeply and truly. However, recent years have been marked by a profound sense of disconnection.

“For most of my life, I have enjoyed the privilege of knowing myself deeply, unwaveringly, truly. In more recent years, I have also endured the discomfort of losing myself,” Simi wrote. “Sometimes, to make room for something else that I needed to be – other times, because I could not, for the life of me, find my way. I felt like a stranger to myself. This version of me has been the hardest one to look at in the mirror.”

Simi’s candid admission comes as she introduces her upcoming album, which she describes as a symbol of finding parts of herself she feared were lost permanently. The singer emphasizes that self-discovery is a continuous journey, and her new music is a tribute to the ongoing process of finding and rediscovering oneself.

“Making this album is a symbol of finding parts of myself again that I hoped I hadn’t lost permanently. I don’t believe that we ever stop finding ourselves. If you’re willing to look, there’s always more. This is a tribute to the things we continue to find and rediscover,” she added.

As a mother of one and a prominent figure in the Nigerian music industry, Simi’s vulnerability and honesty resonate with many who have faced similar struggles. Her upcoming album promises to be a poignant exploration of identity, self-acceptance, and the continuous journey of self-discovery.

Through her music and her message, Simi invites listeners to join her on this journey, offering a reminder that it is okay to feel lost sometimes, and that the path to finding oneself is always worth pursuing.
