Herpha Guta of Ethiopia has become the first woman to finish the Lagos City Marathon 2023 with a time of 2:40:42
She would be going home with a $50, 000 prize.
Kenyan-American Elkanah Kibet was the overall winner of the tournament with a time of 2:14:00
He overtook record holder and former race leader David Bamasai at the 26km mark to clinch the 2023 Lagos City Marathon.
Kibet has thus won the $50,000 prize tag for the Marathon.
The first Nigerian to reach the finish line was Adamu Shehu Muazu from Jo’s, Plateau State.
Meanwhile, organizers of the Lagos City Marathon, Nilayo Sports Management has noted that this year’s race will serve as Olympic qualifiers to the top runners at the event
Chief Bukola Olopade, CEO of Nilayo Sports Management said the Lagos City Marathon achieved a Gold Label Status and thus qualify to serve as Olympic qualifiers.
The marathon began at 7 am at National Stadium, Surulere, with Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, on the sidelines for the start.
Other dignitaries at the starting point include the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth, Olusegun Dawodu, Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Sola Aiyepeku, Head of Technical for the race, Yusuf Ali, among others.
The Lagos City Marathon had over 10,000 runners at the start-line which was in front of the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
