Nigerian-American basketball star Chiney Ogwumike has been named the first-ever female ambassador of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). This historic appointment marks a significant step toward promoting gender inclusivity and expanding the league’s influence across the continent.
Ogwumike, a two-time WNBA All-Star and current ESPN analyst, brings a wealth of experience and passion for basketball development in Africa. As an ambassador, she will play a pivotal role in advancing the BAL’s mission of growing the sport, empowering young athletes, and fostering greater opportunities for women in basketball.
Expressing her excitement, Ogwumike stated, “It is an honor to serve as the first female ambassador for the BAL. Basketball has given me so much, and I am eager to contribute to the game’s growth in Africa, especially by inspiring young girls to dream big and pursue their passions.”
BAL President Amadou Gallo Fall praised Ogwumike’s appointment, highlighting her as a role model and leader in the basketball community.
“Chiney embodies excellence both on and off the court. Her influence and commitment to the development of basketball in Africa will undoubtedly elevate our efforts to expand the game,” he said.
The BAL, a collaboration between the NBA and FIBA, has been instrumental in showcasing African talent on the global stage since its inception in 2021.
