We celebrate top-charting Grammy award-winning songstress Anita Baker!
Known for mega hits such as Angel, Sweet Love, Caught Up In The Rapture, veteran performer Anita Baker, has racked up awards such as: The Grammy, BET, Soul Train, NAACP amongst others.
The extraordinary Baker, known for her powerful voice and soulful unforgettable performances is regarded as one of the most popular singers of soulful romantic ballads during the height of the quiet storm period of contemporary R&B in the 1980s.
Born January 26, 1958, in Toledo, OH, and raised in nearby Detroit, at age 12, she began singing a gospel choir, and by age 16 she was performing with several local bands. In 1975, she successfully auditioned for Chapter 8, one of Detroit’s most popular acts at the time; the group eventually signed with Ariola and released an album in 1979, but things got to a road block when the label was acquired by Arista. Super talented with exceptional vocals, Baker still got dropped and had to resort to working low-paying jobs in Detroit and eventually found steady work as a receptionist at a law firm.
But her passion, music called and she heeded once more, thankfully it paid off big. In 1986, she rose to stardom following the release of her Platinum-selling second album, Rapture, which included the Grammy-winning single “Sweet Love”.
