Ann Cole Lowe: The First African American To Become Noted As A Fashion Designer ??
America’s first haute couture designer Ann Lowe although exceptionally talented didn’t get her well deserved recognition during her lifetime, but thankfully, all that is being changed now.
Lowe is now recognized as a pioneering African American couturier with her pieces now preserved in renowned museum collections including the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of the City of New York, and The Museum at FIT.
Ann Lowe retired in 1972. She died at her daughter’s home on February 25, 1981. Her legacy lives on.
