Born in Guinea in 1958, she grew up in a nation emerging from independence, where resilience and determination were part of daily life. She earned a degree in Social Economy from the University of Paris II (Assas) and a Master’s in Business Administration and Management from Paris Dauphine University. These qualifications gave her the analytical skills, strategic thinking, and leadership abilities essential to navigating the complex world of diplomacy, humanitarian action, and peacekeeping.
Keita began her professional journey in Africa with the United Nations in 1989, engaging directly with communities in Chad, Rwanda, Burundi, and Madagascar. Through her work with UNICEF and UNDP, she built programs that improved the welfare of children and families affected by conflict. She earned a reputation as a problem solver who understood local realities while navigating international frameworks with precision.
Her leadership gained global attention during public health crises. In Sierra Leone, she coordinated the United Nations response to the Ebola outbreak of 2014–2015, directing international resources to contain the epidemic and mitigate its social and economic impact. Her ability to act decisively under pressure demonstrated her commitment to saving lives and managing complex emergencies with authority and clarity.
Keita’s impact in peacekeeping has been equally remarkable. She served as Deputy Joint Special Representative for UNAMID in Darfur, Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, and Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations. In each role, she negotiated delicate agreements, mediated conflicts, and led multinational teams in regions where security, governance, and humanitarian challenges converged. Her leadership brought stability and direction to some of the most challenging missions in modern UN history.
Since January 2021, Keita has served as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Head of MONUSCO, one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
