Every time a professional driver in Lagos State completes a journey safely, every family breathes a little easier, and every commuter reaches their destination without harm, the quiet yet profound impact of Afusat Tiamiyu is felt. Her dedication to road safety has transformed driver education standards in Lagos, touching countless lives and fostering a culture of responsibility on the roads. Afusat did not simply choose a career in public service; she embraced a mission to protect lives and ensure that every journey, no matter how ordinary, is safer for all.
From the outset of her career, Tiamiyu’s journey has been defined by determination and excellence. A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University with a degree in Education/Yoruba, and a holder of a Master’s in Transport Studies from Olabisi Onabanjo University, she joined the Lagos State public service in 1993 as a Traffic Management Officer. Her competence and leadership quickly became evident, earning her a place among the pioneer staff of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and the distinction of becoming its first female Zonal Head—a milestone that broke barriers and set the tone for her impactful career.
In 2009, she was appointed to the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute (LASDRI), where her passion for driver education and road safety found its most meaningful expression. Today, as General Manager, she leads the agency responsible for driver education, certification, retraining, and public safety awareness across Lagos State. Under her stewardship, LASDRI has grown into a key pillar of Lagos State’s road safety framework.
Under Tiamiyu’s leadership, LASDRI has achieved remarkable results. The Institute has trained and recertified hundreds of thousands of professional drivers, demonstrating her commitment to broad-scale impact and behavioural change on Lagos roads. In a single year, LASDRI trained tens of thousands of drivers, reflecting sustained dedication to educating road users. Beyond scale, she has guided initiatives that enhance instructional quality, including annual “Train-The-Trainer” workshops designed to equip driving instructors with modern teaching methods and up-to-date expertise, ensuring drivers receive the highest standards of training.
Her influence extends beyond routine operations to proactive safety measures and community engagement. LASDRI, under her leadership, conducts specialised training for professional drivers in both public and private sectors, including structured programmes for government drivers and organised associations. These programmes emphasise road courtesy, emergency driving, first aid, and defensive techniques, reflecting her belief that road safety is not merely about certification but about cultivating a culture of responsibility among all road users.
Recognition for her leadership has followed naturally from her impact. Tiamiyu has received multiple awards, including the Exemplary Leadership Award from the Yoruba Youth Assembly in Abuja for her innovative and effective leadership at LASDRI. She has also been honoured for integrity, dedication, and professional impact. These accolades underscore her role in strengthening institutional effectiveness and promoting a culture of safety across Lagos State.
Despite the magnitude of her accomplishments, Tiamiyu’s work continues with humility and steadfast resolve. She tirelessly advocates for driver training as a tool for saving lives, encouraging professional drivers to embrace best practices, continuous learning, and compliance with regulations. Her vision reaches beyond certificates and envisions a Lagos with zero road accidents, where every driver’s livelihood and every commuter’s safety are safeguarded through competence and ethical conduct. Her journey from pioneer traffic officer to trailblazing leader is a powerful reminder that when expertise meets empathy, public service can transform an entire city, one road at a time.
