In Nigeria’s corporate landscape, where leadership is defined by vision, resilience and the ability to drive lasting impact, Miriam Olusanya stands as a remarkable example of excellence. As the first woman to become the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) Nigeria, she has not only made history but has also reinforced the message that competence, preparation and integrity remain the true hallmarks of exceptional leadership.
Her journey to the top is rooted in a strong commitment to learning. Olusanya earned a Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm.) from the University of Ibadan before broadening her expertise with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Finance and Accounting from the University of Liverpool. She further strengthened her leadership capabilities through executive education programmes at the Cranfield School of Management and obtained the internationally recognised ACI Dealing Certificate, equipping herself with the technical and strategic skills required to thrive in the financial sector.
Her professional career began in the pharmaceutical industry with SmithKline Beecham Nigeria, where she gained valuable experience before making a defining transition into banking. In 1998, she joined Guaranty Trust Bank as an Executive Trainee, beginning a career that saw her rise through the ranks to the highest office in the bank. What followed was a steady progression built on exceptional performance, sound judgement and an unwavering commitment to delivering value.
Over the years, she acquired extensive experience across some of the bank’s most strategic divisions, including Treasury, Financial Markets, Transaction Services, Corporate Finance, Investment Banking, Investor Relations, Asset and Liability Management, and Wholesale Banking. Each role broadened her expertise and prepared her for greater responsibilities, earning her the respect of colleagues, industry stakeholders and the institution she would later lead.
In 2018, Olusanya was appointed Executive Director with responsibility for Wholesale Banking, further cementing her reputation as one of the bank’s most accomplished executives. Three years later, she made history when she was named Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of GTBank Nigeria, becoming the first woman to occupy the office since the bank’s establishment. Her appointment marked a defining moment, not only for GTBank but also for women aspiring to leadership across Corporate Nigeria.
Today, Olusanya continues to lead one of Africa’s most respected financial institutions with clarity of purpose, strategic insight and an unwavering focus on excellence. Under her leadership, GTBank remains committed to innovation, customer-centric service and sustainable growth, maintaining the high standards that have become synonymous with the brand. Her approach reflects a belief that enduring success is built on discipline, adaptability and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
Her outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s banking industry have earned national recognition, including the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), conferred by the Federal Government of Nigeria. More than the honours she has received, however, her legacy is defined by perseverance, professionalism and the barriers she has broken for women in corporate leadership.
Miriam Olusanya’s story is one of purpose, preparation and possibility. From her beginnings in the pharmaceutical industry to leading one of Africa’s foremost financial institutions, she has demonstrated that exceptional leadership is shaped by vision, resilience and consistent excellence. As one of the defining faces of Corporate Nigeria, she continues to inspire a new generation of professionals to dream boldly, lead with integrity and leave a lasting impact on the organisations and communities they serve.
