International Women’s Day celebrates women whose courage, leadership, and dedication contribute meaningfully to the advancement of society. It recognises individuals who use their voices, knowledge, and influence to challenge inequality, uplift communities, and create opportunities for future generations. Across the world, this global observance honours women whose work reflects resilience, purpose, and a deep commitment to social progress.
Welisane Maagbor is a Cameroonian youth advocate and gender equality champion based in Buea, Cameroon. She is widely recognised for her dedication to empowering young people and amplifying the voices of girls and young women in conversations that shape social development and community progress.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Women and Gender Studies and a Master’s degree in Conflict Resolution from the University of Buea. Her academic background provided her with a strong foundation in gender dynamics, community engagement, negotiation, and peacebuilding, equipping her with the tools to address structural inequalities and support inclusive community development.
Through her advocacy work, Welisane has become an influential voice in youth-led movements that promote sexual and reproductive health rights and gender equality. She serves as a WhatGirlsWant Focal Point within the ATHENA Network, working with young women across Africa to elevate their priorities in advocacy spaces and policy discussions.
She also serves as an Ambassador for the HER Voice Fund through Y+ Global, where she champions access to accurate information, education, and youth-friendly health services for adolescents and young women. Her work contributes to strengthening youth leadership and expanding opportunities for young people to participate in decision-making processes that affect their lives.
Beyond advocacy platforms, Welisane Maagbor actively contributes to community empowerment through mentorship and leadership training initiatives. She has facilitated workshops that have inspired and supported more than a hundred young people, particularly girls, helping them build confidence, strengthen leadership abilities, and develop the courage to advocate for themselves.
