Dr Kasonde Mwinga has officially taken up her position as the World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Uganda, presenting her credentials to the government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During a meeting with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Henry Oryem Okello, Dr Mwinga expressed her gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to supporting Uganda’s health priorities.
The Zambian medical scientist emphasized the organization’s focus on advancing universal health coverage and improving the well-being of Ugandans.
With over two decades of experience in public health across Africa and Asia, Dr. Mwinga brings a wealth of expertise to her new role.
She has previously served as WHO Country Representative in Rwanda, Acting Representative in Eritrea, and as WHO India’s Team Leader for promoting health through the life course.
Most recently, she was Director for Universal Health Coverage/Life Course at WHO’s Regional Office for Africa in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo.
Before joining WHO in 2001, Dr Mwinga worked as a pediatric specialist, honorary lecturer, and researcher in Zambia.
A trained paediatrician and public health expert, she combines clinical and policy experience in her leadership approach.
Her appointment comes at a time when Uganda is working to strengthen its health sector, particularly in disease surveillance, maternal and child health, and emergency response.
WHO has been a key partner in Uganda’s health initiatives, including efforts to combat outbreaks of Ebola, malaria, and COVID-19.
As she takes on her new role, Dr. Mwinga is expected to collaborate closely with the Ugandan government, development partners, and health institutions to reinforce healthcare systems and promote sustainable health solutions.
