A bold step in beauty history has been made as Mary Yongai, a 26-year-old makeup artist from Sierra Leone, successfully broke a 19-year-old world record by completing 111 cosmetic makeovers in 24 hours. Her achievement has not only exceeded her personal target but has also rewritten the Guinness World Records for the most makeovers by a single artist in one day.
The record, which was previously held by Indonesia’s Martha Tilaar with 96 makeovers set in 2005, was smashed by Yongai during her attempt on a bustling day in Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown. In the midst of the vibrant city, Mary, armed with determination and skill, completed a total of 111 makeovers, far surpassing her original goal of 100. The feat required meticulous application of concealer, foundation, eye shadow, blush, mascara, lipstick, and other products to meet the strict criteria set by the record-keeping authorities.
A large and enthusiastic crowd of supporters, including Sierra Leonean celebrities and government officials, gathered to witness the historic moment. With cheers of encouragement and awe from the audience, Mary worked tirelessly for 24 hours, taking just a single 20-minute break. The artist abstained from food, bathroom breaks, and even common stimulants like caffeine and nicotine, relying solely on soft drinks and what she described as “the grace of God” to keep her energy levels steady throughout the challenge.
As she completed her final makeover, the atmosphere was electric with excitement. Celebrations erupted among the crowd, leading to scenes so overwhelming that Mary momentarily fainted due to exhaustion. “People were celebrating me, and I felt so honoured,” Mary shared. “Even to get me out of the location was difficult, but when we got to the hotel room, I felt so blessed to attempt this record-breaking challenge.”
Mary’s accomplishment is not only a personal triumph but also marks Sierra Leone’s second world record, following the largest Sampa dance held at the National Stadium in Freetown in 2012. Her achievement has elevated the profile of the beauty industry in the country and inspired many young people to pursue their dreams, no matter how ambitious they may seem.
Her journey to break the world record was deeply inspired by Nigerian chef Hilda Baci, whose cook-a-thon record sparked Mary’s decision to go after her own title. She spent weeks practicing, perfecting her technique on friends and family until she felt confident enough to attempt the feat. In a trial run, she completed 48 makeovers in eight hours, giving her the belief that breaking the record was within reach.
For Mary Yongai, this record is more than a personal victory. “Achieving this record is a dream come true,” she said. “As a young girl, trying to achieve what people think is impossible, I’m super proud of myself.”
