WAP Rapper Cardi B took to Instagram on Friday to announce that she’s gotten into the doll business.
The 28-year-old rapper showing off the doll designed in her likeness, created in collaboration with the new brand Real Women Are, a company dedicated to diversity and inclusion to celebrate all girls, wrote on Instagram:
“BARDI GANG!! I’m dropping my own doll TODAY! Inspired by me. Created by me. Designed by me. Thank you @officialrealwomenareThis means sooo much. ❗❗ Visit the website now to reserve your doll. You only have 72 hours – so go.”
Although some fans were super excited about the news, others expressed disappointment, asking the rapper to focus instead on releasing a new album, the backlash, was major and Cardi deleted her Twitter account.
Explaining her motive of joining the doll business, Cardi shared that she was mostly inspired to create the doll because of her 2-year-old daughter, Kulture, and her nieces.
“I’m a girl’s mom and y’all know how crazy I go with my nieces on Christmas,” she admitted. “And I just be like ‘wow,’ these dolls are not like Barbies, they are way more expensive, they come with way more fashion, they come way more diverse, they come so chic and I gotta constantly spend money on these dolls because my daughter constantly wants me to buy these dolls. So it’s like, you know what? Why am I not going to get the doll business?”
In an interview with Today, Cardi explained the importance of little girls having dolls that look like them.
“…Growing up, I ain’t never seen a doll that looked like me, I’ve never seen a doll that really represents me,” she said. “When you go to the doll aisle when you was my age, it’s either like there’s a real white one, there’s a real dark one, and there’s like barely one that’s like in the middle. None of them have my style, none of them have my flavor, and it’s like I want a doll that represents me.”
